En abril de 2005 Tao dio una serie de conferencias en el AAARI (Asian-American/Asian Research Institute) bajo el título «Simultaneous Interpretation: Past and Present», en las que intentaba arrojar algo de luz sobre el a veces desconocido y un tanto esotérico mundo de la interpretación simultánea, aportando a su vez una perspectiva histórica de los orígenes de la profesión tras la segunda guerra mundial. Asimismo describía el tipo de personas que conforman esta profesión, el funcionamiento de la interpretación simultánea en la práctica y en el seno de las Naciones Unidas, y rememoraba algunas anécdotas de experiencias durante sus más de 30 años de carrera.

Los días 24, 25 y 26 de octubre de 2010 se celebrará el primero de estos cursos. Se trata de un taller intensivo de carácter práctico sobre interpretación simultánea (20 horas) que lleva organizándose con gran éxito desde 1998. Es requisito fundamental que los participantes hablen con soltura portugués e inglés o español y cuenten con experiencia previa en traducción o interpretación. El segundo curso de interpretación simultánea es de nivel medio o avanzado y está dirigido a intérpretes profesionales o principiantes que tengan el portugués como lengua A o B. Este curso se celebrará del 1 al 5 de noviembre de 2010 (40 horas) y el plazo de matrícula está abierto hasta el día 24 de septiembre. Más información: MIIS

Precisamente sobre este asunto escribía José Antonio de Urbina en su libro sobre protocolo un apartado especial sobre el intérprete y sugería que:

Respecto a los intérpretes conviene recordar dos normas importantes:

1) Los intérpretes han de ser profesionales. Evítese, en lo posible, el intérprete aficionado, aunque domine el idioma, pues carece de los conocimientos y técnica necesarios para esta importante labor.

2) En las comidas, siéntese al intérprete en una sillita, detrás y entre los dos comensales cuya conversación interpreta. El intérprete come antes o después, pero no durante la comida, pues su misión es interpretar. Existen países que con un excesivo sentido igualitario insisten en sentar al intérprete (que puede ser un miembro de la embajada o de la delegación extranjera) en la mesa, entre las dos personas interesadas. A mi entender es un error porque de este modo no interpreta bien, pues o interpreta o come, no puede hacer las dos cosas. Incluso interfiere en la conversación de los dos comensales por estar sentado en medio; y como la misión del intérprete es interpretar y esta misión es importante, no pierde ni dignidad ni categoría por estar sentado detrás sin comer, aunque sea miembro de la embajada o de la delegación extranjera.

Al igual que explicaba Urbina con tanto sentido común, La Guía de Protocolo y etiqueta para actos oficiales, del Ministerio de Defensa de EE. UU., contempla a su vez la figura del intérprete en el caso de banquetes o comidas con dignatarios extranjeros:

An interpreter may be required at a dinner for a foreign dignitary. The interpreter should sit close to the dignitary and the person for whom he/she is interpreting. Typical seating plans for an event requiring an interpreter are shown at figures 3–14 and 3–15. The interpreter’s duties are so demanding that he or she will find it difficult to eat and interpret effectively at the same time. However, this does not preclude the interpreter from being seated at the table to the right of the foreign dignitary and being served as are the other dinner guests.
